The year was and Lucian Bernhard was seven years old. Too young to read, he was nonetheless fascinated by the street signs and shop signs that defined and decorated his neighborhood. With paintbrush and ink bottle he meticulously copied the words. Eclectically then, he selected many of the Gothic characters and composed letters to friends and members of his family. To him these were beautiful compositions and he was greatly disappointed when he learned that no one could read them.

Ten years later, the adolescent Bernhard managed to get a ticket to the historic Glaspalast Exhibition of Interior Decorations in Munich. Lucian Bernhard (born Emil Kahn, March 15, – May 29, ) was a German graphic designer, type designer, professor, interior designer, and artist during the first half of the twentieth century.

Career

Bernhard's attention-grabbing poster for Priester matches (c. ). Bernhard reduced advertising to a minimal picture and a wordmark in wobbly bold lettering. The style became very influential.

Bernhard was influential in helping create the design style known as Plakatstil (Poster Style), which used reductive imagery and flat-color as well as Sachplakat ('object poster') which restricted the image to simply the object being advertised and the brand name. He was also known for his designs for Stiller shoes, Manoli cigarettes, and Priester matches.

Though he studied briefly at the Akademie in Munich, he was largely self-taught. He moved to Berlin in where he worked as a poster designer and art director for magazines. Around the beginning of World War 1, Brenhard, among other artists, contributed greatly to instilling support for the war effort in German civilians through propaganda. Bernhard Goetzke was a German actor of the silent and sound film era. Born on June 5, , in Danzig, he received his acting education and worked in theaters in Hagen, Dusseldorf, Dresden, and Berlin.
