ISLAMABAD: Lieutenant (Lt) General Rizwan Akhtar has been appointed as the new chief of Pakistan's premier intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), in a major reshuffle in the army, which also saw the promotion of six major generals to the rank of lieutenant generals.
The chief military spokesperson, Major General Asim Salim Bajwa, confirmed on Monday through his twitter account that former Director General Sindh Rangers General Rizwan Akhar, after being elevated to the rank of Lt General, will replace the incumbent DG ISI Lt General Zaheerul Islam, who is set to retire in October.
Akhtar will assume his responsibilities on November 8.

Pakistan's ISI chief Rizwan Akhtar faces daunting challenges
There is a sense in the international community that the Kashmir dispute has reached a stalemate.
But there is deep, persistent frustration at the highest levels of the Pakistan military that the Kashmir cause has not received more international attention and that the dispute remains unresolved.
Gen Akhtar will be under pressure from many of his military colleagues to be more assertive on the issue, and to stand up to Mr Modi.
But he has limited room for manoeuvre.
Should Pakistan-based militants cross the Line of Control and mount a spectacular attack there would, in all likelihood, be a ferocious Indian response.
Pakistan also faces uncertainty on its western borders.
Ever since the days of the anti-Soviet jihad, the ISI has been a big player in Afghanistan.
Today, the leadership of the Pakistan Taliban, which seeks to overthrow the Pakistani state and which has killed many ISI officers, is sheltering in Afghanistan.

RAWALPINDI: Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar, considered a close ally of Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif, has been promoted to the post of Director General Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) on Monday among other promotions within the army ranks.

The announcement comes as current ISI chief Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam and five lieutenant generals are scheduled to retire from service in the first week of October.
The military officers retiring in October include ISI chief Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam, Mangla corps commander Lt-Gen Tariq Khan, Gujranwala corps commander Lt-Gen Saleem Nawaz, Peshawar corps commander Lt-Gen Khalid Rabbani and Karachi corps commander Lt-Gen Sajjad Ghani.
All five positions are of paramount importance in the military but the chief of the ISI is regarded as the army's most important official after the army chief himself. The ISI chief is appointed by the prime minister, traditionally on the advice of the army chief.
General Rizwan and Maj Gen Naveed Mukhtar were close contenders due to their experience of intelligence.

Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen Rizwan Akhtar on Saturday requested early retirement from the Pakistan Army citing "pressing personal commitments".
Gen Akhtar, in a letter, asked for "premature release" starting Oct 9, , after nearly 35 years of active commissioned service in the armed forces.
"I want everyone [] to respect my decision and not succumb or resort to speculation in any domain. I shall be available for any service in the army whenever needed," he added.
Akhtar, who was replaced by Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar as director general (DG) ISI, was posted as president of the National Defence University two weeks after Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa took oath last year.
Gen Akhtar is a graduate of the Command and Staff College in Quetta, National Defence University and the Army War College, USA. He was commissioned in the Pakistan Army in Frontier Force Regiment in September
He is from the Frontier Force Regiment and commanded the infantry brigade and infantry division in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).
