Biography
Malian guitarist Habib Koité is one of Africa&#;s most popular and recognized musicians. Born in in Thiés, Senegal, Habib comes from a noble line of Khassonké griots, traditional troubadors who provide wit, wisdom and musical entertainment at social gatherings and special events. Habib grew up surrounded by seventeen brothers and sisters, and developed his unique guitar style accompanying his griot mother. He inherited his passion for music from his paternal grandfather who played the kamele n&#;goni, a traditional four-stringed instrument associated with hunters from the Wassolou region of Mali.
“Nobody really taught me to sing or to play the guitar” explains Habib, “I watched my parents, and it washed off on me.” Habib enrolled at the National Institute of Arts (INA) in Bamako, Mali. In , after only six months, he was made conductor of INA Star, the school’s prestigious band. He studied music for four years, graduating at the top of his class in (In fact, his talent was so impressive, that upon graduation, the INA hired him as a guitar teacher). The Kora player Lamine Cissokho is the descendant of a famous griot family whose traditions date back to the 14th century, passing traditional pieces down from generation to generation. Aly Keïta gained worldwide recognition for his mastery of the balafon, impressive virtuosity, and unique sound. Three virtuoso artists linked by the same cultural heritage; a melting pot that inspires their compositions and sublimates the renewal of the genre.
Joining the trio onstage will be Habib’s longtime percussionist, Mama KONE (Djembe, Calabash, electronic pad) who has also performed with Eric Bibb.

The musical career of Koité began in the late s, and grow considerably in the s. In , he formed his first band, Bamada, which included Keletigui Diabate, an older and already famous Malian musician. Koité performed frequently around Mali and gained a national reputation.
In the early s Koité gained international status. Invited to France by his friend Maurice Cimalando, Habib Koité recorded two titles. The first one, in , “Cigarette A Bana,” was a huge commercial success and made him a pop star in Western Africa. Il a grandi au milieu de dix-sept frères et soeurs à Kayes, capitale régionale de l’Ouest du pays, Mais très vite en , la famille part à Bamako, l’année où le président Modibo Keita est renversé. Commence alors une période d’essor incroyable pour la musique malienne, grâce à la volonté du nouveau président Moussa Traoré d’instaurer des Biennales artistiques régionales et nationales. Celles-ci donnent lieu à une compétition entre les différents orchestres et artistes des 8 régions du pays, et cela favorise l’émergence d’une nouvelle génération de musiciens partout dans le pays.
Bien qu’influencé par son grand-père qui joue du ngoni, un luth malien à quatre cordes, c’est essentiellement en autodidacte qu’Habib apprend à jouer sur une guitare acoustique. Habib accompagne aussi, souvent, sa mère qui chante lors de divers événements de la vie sociale, notamment lors des cérémonies de baptêmes.
