Augusta State Hospital from the River

Oil painting
Circa

Augusta State Hospital, later called the Augusta Mental Health Institute, is featured in the background of this painting. The hospital’s location, directly across the Kennebec River from the State House, was planned to ensure that it would never be forgotten by the governor or legislature. At the time this painting was completed, the State Hospital was called Maine Insane Hospital. It was built of Hallowell granite and opened its doors in The painting is attributed to Charles Codman, a Portland artist who died in The first owner of the Blaine House, Captain Hall, would have seen rafts of his logs on the river, similar to those in the lower left of the painting.

Welcome to our historic Inn (circa ), designed by well-known architect John Calvin Stevens. The exterior is clad with a variety of cut shingles, as was his trademark. There is terracotta shag adorning the entrance, eaves and exterior. The multi-gabled roof adds scale and prominence to this Queen Ann Victorian Inn. Looking skyward, you will see the 4 -story high chimney with leaded stained glass. The eye shaped windows peeking out are for exterior adornment only. On the inside, they are tucked in the eaves or closets. Carved wood detail is everywhere, all overlooking the water of the Presumpscot River.

Walk up the front steps and enter into THE ELMS INN through the gold leaf wallpapered vestibule, then into our lobby. You’re immediately struck by the pickled oak walls, paneled ceiling with ship styled beams, tiled fireplace adorned with irises, and grand stairway. Some have said that this stairway is as attractive as the brides walking down it on their wedding day. This is a great room to relax in during your Southern Maine vacation.

Go through the pocket doors and into the billiards room, with another stunning fireplace. The tin ceiling creates a historic classic feel. However

John Calvin Stevens was born in the state of Massachusetts but moved to Maine with his family at the age of two. Growing up in Portland, Stevens would graduate through the Portland Public school system of the mids.  His family was not rich, and as a result, he chose to apprentice under notable Portland architect Francis H. Fassett.  Stevens excelled in this apprenticeship which led to Fassett placing Stevens in charge of his new Boston office.  During his time in Boston, Stevens would meet and be significantly influenced by a number of other architects who would go on to design great works within the United States.  Of particular relevance to the J.B.
