Keorapetse William Kgositsile (19 September – 3 January ), also known by his pen name Bra Willie, was a South African Tswana poet, journalist and political activist. An influential member of the African National Congress in the s and s, he was inaugurated as South Africa’s National Poet Laureate in Kgositsile lived in exile in the United States from until , the peak of his literary career. He made an extensive study of African-American literature and culture, becoming particularly interested in jazz. During the s he was a central figure among African-American poets, encouraging interest in Africa as well as the practice of poetry as a performance art; he was well known for his readings in New York City jazz clubs. Kgositsile was one of the first to bridge the gap between African poetry and Black poetry in the United States.

Keorapetse William Kgositsile (19 September – 3 January ), also known by his pen name Bra Willie, was one of the most internationally acclaimed and widely published South African poets. Some of his work has been translated into many languages. His poetry collections include My Name is Afrika, The Present is a Dangerous Place to Live, Heartprints, When the Clouds Clear, To the Bitter End, If I Could Sing, This Way I Salute You. He has been the recipient of a number of literary awards including the Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Prize, the Harlem Cultural Council Poetry Award, the Conrad Kent Rivers Memorial Poetry Award, the Herman Charles Bosman Prize. In he was awarded the National Order of Ikhamanga: Silver (OIS). He was awarded the degree Doctor of Literature and Philosophy (DLitt et Phil) (honoris causa) by UNISA in He was inaugurated as South Africas National Poet Laureate in by the wRite associates in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture.

Introduction
The Keorapetse Kgositsile bibliography was put together between December and March It is modeled after the Kamau Brathwaite Bibliography developed by Kelly Baker Josephs (York College, City University of New York) and Teanu Reid (Yale University) in conjunction with the Caribbean Digital event at Barnard College. The earliest items recorded here are Kgositsile’s “Point of Departure: Fire Dance Fire Song,” published in in the journal Negro Digest as well as “Black Arts: An Anthology of Black Creations,” of which Kgositsile was a contributor. In addition, Kgositsile worked as a writer for Craft Horizons magazine where he wrote commentaries on exhibitions in and (these items are listed under Critical Prose).
