Alice Liddell: the real Alice in Wonderland.
Alice Liddell was the middle daughter of Henry George Liddell, Dean of Christ Church at Oxford. Alice, along with her sisters Edith and Lorina, first met Lewis Carroll on April 25, , as he and a friend were setting up to photograph Christ Church Cathedral from the garden of the Dean’s residence.
Over the next few years, Carroll would become a close friend of the Liddell family. Alice and her sisters were frequent models for Carroll’s photography, and he often took the children on outings.
On July 4th, , Carroll and the Rev. Robinson Duckworth took the girls boating up the Isis. Alice later recalled that as the company took tea on a shaded bank, she implored Carroll to “tell us a story.”
According to Carroll, “in a desperate attempt” and “without the least idea what was to happen afterwards,” he sent his heroine “straight down a rabbit-hole.” Upon Alice’s urging, Carroll began writing down his tale. On November 26, , he presented her with an elaborate hand-illustrated manuscript, titled Alice’s Adventures Under Ground.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known to the world as Lewis Carroll, died on January 14 at the age of sixty-five. For almost years now his life has been the subject of speculation and controversy, which shows no sign of dying away. The broad facts are well enough known. He studied at Christ Church, Oxford and later taught mathematics there. He wrote Alice&#;s Adventures in Wonderland for the three daughters of Henry Liddell, Dean of the College. Their names &#; Ina, Alice and Edith &#; are almost legend, the golden afternoon on the river that gave rise to the story immortalised in Dodgson&#;s own verse. He never married. He liked the company of female children. But beyond this much is unknown, contradictory and curious. Was his love for girl children a suppressed sexual passion? Or was it as innocent as he always maintained? What happened to the four volumes of his diary &#;lost&#; after his death? Who cut certain pages from the remaining volumes? And why?

The inspiration for the Alice in Wonderland stories of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (who wrote under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll), Alice Liddell was one of four children of Dr. Henry Liddell, the dean of Christ Church College in Oxford, England, where Dodgson was a young lecturer in mathematics. According to Dodgson's diaries, which cover his life from to , he first met Alice on September 4, , while out sketching, and was promptly enchanted by her. Living in close proximity to the Deanery, Dodgson nearly became part of the Liddell family, and as such he accompanied Alice and her siblings on outings, instructed them in their studies, and used them as subjects for his photogr

By the age of twenty, Alice Liddell had perfected the art of becoming a photograph. In she patiently posed for Julia Margaret Cameron, enacting roles from mythology and literature as Alethea, Ceres, John Keats’ Saint Agnes, and Alfred Lord Tennyson’s Enid. The most compelling of these thirteen images is one of Alice staged as Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruitfulness. Alice appears half-length against a garden wall, framed by foliage and punctuated by Cameron’s hazy technique, one hand on hip, the other cupped in a gesture of offering.
There is a striking similarity between Cameron’s photograph of Alice as Pomona and one taken of her in , when she was six years old. In Alice Liddell as “The Beggar Maid,” she poses as the title character from an Tennyson poem, set against a garden wall, foliage at her feet, right hand cupped while the left rests on her hip. In both, Alice’s blunt bangs frame her blankly direct address to the camera. The same pose and setting represent Alice as a child and adult, though she wears a new costume for her latest role.
