We are pleased to have the opportunity to exhibit the work of Lynn Geesaman who revived the historical approach of Pictorialism to a contemporary vision and pushed that approach even further than her predecessors to create beautiful and dynamic imagery.
&#;My subjects are found in European gardens, parks, and arboreal landscapes, where nature is shaped and controlled by aesthetic intent. I look for order, variously imposed, in marginally natural settings, for perspectives concealed within the obvious design. The composition of my photographs favors a representation that is both abstract and depictive, wherein strong geometries overlay detail. My interest lies in a transformative process, which uses photography to idealize rather than to document. These photographs are about culturally known landscapes, looked at in a particular way.”

Reminiscent of images produced by nineteenth century travel photographers, such as Francis Frith, the photographs of Lynn Geesaman display solitary, curious worlds. Geesaman accentuates the formal compositions of the places that she photographs; English gardens, canals and roadsides in Belgium, and Italian hillside villages. Her photographs add monumentality and solidity to the landscape making the ingredients melt into abstraction as value and shape take on increased significance. This is further increased by her printing method that results in a shadowy glow that permeates the photographs. The overall effect supports Geesaman&#;s Romantic notion that there is a reality beyond the empirical.

Born in Cleveland, Lynn Geesaman () was introduced to photography while studying physics at Wellesley College. An interest in gardens led to research, travel and photography in England, France, Belgium, Italy and Germany. New to Geesaman's photography is her use of brilliant color. Through meticulous darkroom printing, the viewer is confronted with glowing yellow trees, glistening orange foliage and soft green waters that challenge the perception of natures' colors. Geesaman has exhibited widely in museums and galleries throughout the U.S. and Europe including Bibliothéque Nationale de France, Paris; The American Cultural Center, Brussels; The Minneapolis Institute of Arts; and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. Her work is represented in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Philadelphia Museum of Art; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris. She has received many honors, including the Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship and the Arts Midwest/NEA Regional Visual Arts Fellowship Award.

Geesaman's work included soft-focus photography that was a result of how she processed the prints she made. Although she is primarily known for her photographs of European gardens and canals, which she started visiting in , Geesaman was already starting to be known for her photography even before starting to visit European garden. Her work is focused on light, and while originally she worked in black and white her later work adds color.
