A History of William Hill
For many this is the first name in gambling: Growing up in the days before the arrival of the Internet, William Hill betting shops were prevalent on British High Streets and those of a certain age who still like to bet online would have almost certainly used one of their shops at some point.
They aren’t necessarily the oldest bookmaker still in existence but their history stretches back over 80 years so how did it all began and how did they become the respected brand that we all know today?
Beginnings: to ’s
The company was founded in by a Mr William Hill himself and in the days before the industry was fully legalised, the official history states that it was set up as a telephone and postal service only and certainly that would have been a main focus of the operation at that time.
William Hill, like many of his contemporaries, started out in bookmaking at a young age and while working as an apprentice at the BSA motorcycle factory during World War I, he would drive around and collect bets on his bike.

On 11 April , the Wikimedia community lost one of its contributors – Muid Latif. Muid was known for his contributions as the Project Lead for Creative Commons Malaysia. Muid actively promoted the free-culture movement and open collaboration. He was a Malaysian web designer, graphic designer, and digital artist who actively encouraged the young generation to take the plunge into design and make their mark in the field. Muid was also one of the official Behance Ambassadors representing Malaysia. His demise is lamented by many not only because of his efforts in the field, but also because he passed away at the young age of 41 years.
A graduate in fine arts from the University Technology Mara (UiTM), Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia, Muid founded Digital Malaya Project (DMP), a collective art group that supports Malaysia&#;s creative multimedia industry in This Project was involved in art exhibitions from Malaysia to Singapore, Jakarta, Bangkok, Japan and Germany, and had been involved in pro-bono projects and campaigns with the Malaysian AIDS Council, Yahoo! Flickr Malaysia group, government bodies, and NGOs such as the Perdana Leadership Foundation.

We were incredibly saddened to learn recently that our friend and Creative Commons community member Muid Latif had passed away.
Muid was the Project Lead of CC Malaysia and was an extremely talented digital artist and designer who released his work openly. He believed passionately in the ideals of the CC community—openness, access, and collaboration. He was especially interested in how open approaches to creation and distribution could benefit artists (and the world generally).
He was also an awesome dancer (!) and one of the warmest, funniest, and genuinely nicest people I&#;ve had the pleasure of meeting through my work at CC. I know many others feel this same way.

The man behind the brand, Mr William Hill himself, started taking bets as early as , but it was in that he opened his first licensed betting shop.
This led to the exponential growth of the famous high street bookie that we see on the streets of the UK today, as through various buyouts of smaller bookmakers Hill’s retail portfolio grew to giant proportions.
These days the company is multi-national, and relies as heavily on online business as it does on the traditional retail side of things, with ambitions to take this much further in the future.
The purchase of Mr Green online casino is a case in point. Having previously adopted a growth strategy of acquiring physical businesses they could rebrand as William Hill, Mr Green represents the first acquisition made based on the strength of the brand itself.
However, any plans the company had to continue in this way have been shelved.
Their recent takeover by Caesars, who sold the European assets to , means that William Hill is now at a turning point in its’ history. It is no longer in control of its own destiny, now being a brand that is part of a larger group rather than a brand being run independently.
