Jerusalem’s Tower of David Museum, one of Israel’s leading cultural institutions, reopened its doors recently after being closed to the public for three months as a result of coronavirus precautions. It has relaunched with an uplifting exhibition called “The Banai Family – This is Our Song: A Musical Journey from Persia to Jerusalem.” The visitor is given an audio guide with personal earphones to walk through the exhibition, which highlights the creativity of this unique family, whose roots were nurtured in the traditional Jewish Persian culture of Shiraz, but crystallized just as a modern, avant-garde society was emerging in Jerusalem.

Ehud Banai (born March 31, ) is an Israeli singer and songwriter.

Early life

Banai, of Persian Jewish and Afghan Jewish descent, was born in Jerusalem to the actor Yaakov Banai, the eldest of the Banai siblings, and moved to Givataim at the age of four.

Music career

At the age of ten he learned to play the cello, and listened to Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, and later The Beatles.

In he was drafted to the Israel Defense Forces, and served in the Nahal infantry brigade. In the kibbutz he learned to play the guitar. After his discharge, he moved to London, where he played in the London Underground for six months. It was during this period that he decided to become a musician.

He returned to Israel and lived in Ramat Gan and later in Rosh Pina. In he formed a band with singer Avi Matos. He made several other attempts at a breakthrough during the following years. He tried out for Shlomo Bar's band, Habrera Hativit, but wasn't accepted. In , Ehud and his band "Haplitim" ("The Refugees") broke through, with the hit single "Ir Miklat" (City of Refuge) and the rock opera "Mami".
