LIBERTINI--Richard Joseph,
actor, died January 7, after a two year battle against cancer. He was born nearly 83 years ago in Cambridge, MA to Esther and Rocco Libertini. He graduated from Emerson College and was partner with MacIntyre Dixon and Linda Segal in the uproarious act they named, "Stewed Prunes" which played in coffee houses in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. His first Broadway play was in Woody Allen's "Don't Drink the Water." His last was in Allen's "Relatively Speaking" in Richard worked in a number of television series, and movies, most notably as the Guru in the film, "All of Me," and the crazy General in "The In-laws." He is survived by his son Richard, a musician, sister Alice Langone, brother Albert, brother-in-law Mike Langone, sister-in-law Catherine Dillon, cousin Mario Libertini of Abruzzi, Italy, cousin Joe DiTuillio, beloved nieces and nephews, former wife, and friend Melinda Dillon, and many true and great friends. A memorial service will be held in the future.

Richard Libertini was born in E. Cambridge, Massachusetts, to parents who had come to America from southern Italy. Having grown up in a household where both Italian and English were spoken, he developed an ear for foreign accents. A facility he would later use to advantage on stage and in films.
He graduated from Emerson College in Boston, and for a while earned a living as a trumpet player in the Boston area. Later, he moved to New York, where he teamed up with two former college classmates, MacIntyre Dixon and Lynda Segal, to create an off-Broadway revue called "Stewed Prunes." (This was during the coffee house revolution in the s. Bob Dylan was playing around the corner.) The show was quite successful and after running a year in New York they took it on the road. While playing Chicago, he was asked to join the renowned Second City Improvisational Theatre Group, an association which continues to the present.
After a number of years doing stage work in New York (Woody Allen's Don't Drink the Water () and Paul Sills' Story Theatre () among many others) he eventually moved to L.A. where he began doing films. Three of his most memorable characters are the

Richard Libertini, the character actor probably best known for playing the doubting news editor in the “Fletch” movies, has died at
Libertini was born in East Cambridge, Massachusetts, to parents who had immigrated to America from southern Italy. He attended, and graduated from, Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts.
His first movie appearances were in “The Night They Raided Minsky's,” “Don't Drink the Water” and “Catch“ He moved on to notable character roles including the insane General Garcia in the movie “The In-Laws” and the sidekick to Burt Reynolds in the movie “Sharky’s Machine.” His most memorable role would be playing Chevy Chase’s doubting boss in “Fletch.”
On television, he was a series regular during the first season of “Soap” and starred on the sitcom “The Fanelli Boys.” One of his more recent appearances was on the television drama “Supernatural.”
In , Libertini made a final Broadway appearance in Woody Allen’s “Honeymoon Hotel,” one of the three one-acts in the stage production “Relatively Speaking.”
He was a member of the famed Second City comedy troupe in Chicago.
