It is not uncommon to see people tinkering away at their cars in the driveway on a weekend in Perth’s suburbs.
But drive past Rosco McGlashan’s Mullaloo home and you might look twice.
A metre-long, $3 million shiny blue machine sits in his driveway, the culmination of a lifetime of tinkering.
After five years in design and an year build, the Aussie Invader 5R is ready to break the world land speed record.
All that’s needed now is a long, straight Outback track clear of any roos; and a lot of money.
“It’s been described as the most innovative backyard project in Australia’s history,” McGlashan quipped.
But far from your average backyard project, the Aussie Invader 5R has a single bi-propellant rocket motor producing , horsepower.
The year-old and his team hope it will be enough to send the tonne vehicle to mp/h (km/h) — the “holy grail of land racing” — in just over 20 seconds.
“To see a car go over supersonic, it would be hard to describe, it’s something that’s never been done,” McGlashan said.
