    How does Sassoon emphasize the soldier's innocence?

    Sassoon emphasizes the soldier's innocence in the first stanza, describing him as a "simple soldier boy" (Line 1). This highlights the boy's youth and naivety. This description is further developed when the speaker tells us that the soldier was a happy person who "grinned at life in empty joy," suggesting an ignorant kind of bliss (Line 2). The boy also "slept soundly through the lonesome dark" and "whistled early with the lark," showing an easeful connection with nature and the rhythms of life (Lines ). These qualities all emphasize the innocence of the soldier, who didn't deserve the horrors he endured during the war.

    What is the impact of telling us about the soldier before he went to war?

    The difference in the stanzas that depict the soldier's youth, naivety, and joy and describe the horrific conditions leading to his death help the reader understand how the young soldier was changed by his experience of war. Sassoon does not linger on details in this poem, and the fast transition from idyllic existence to suicide serves to sh

    Though remembered mostly for his war poetry published between and , Sassoon's writing spanned well beyond this period. His early, privately published work centers on music, nature, and romance, as exemplified in collections such as Twelve Sonnets (), Melodies (), An Ode for Music (), and Hyacinth (). Best characterized as Georgian verse, these lyrical and formally conservative poems are ingrained with an appreciation for the English countryside, as well as a concern with pleasure. These works are often adorned with details about shepherds and pastoral paraphernalia. Sassoon's preference for the sonnet is clear—three of these pre-war collections contained the word "Sonnets" in the title. Some classical references are also made: for example, dryads move through dark woods in "Dryads," and Orpheus sings praises to the natural world in the play Orpheus in Diloeryum. Though religion would not become a serious topic in

    If I were fierce, and bald, and short of breath
    I'd live with scarlet Majors at the Base,
    And speed glum heroes up the line to death.
    You'd see me with my puffy petulant face,
    Guzzling and gulping in the best hotel,
    Reading the Roll of Honour. "Poor young chap,"
    I'd say — "I used to know his father well;
    Yes, we've lost heavily in this last scrap."
    And when the war is done and youth stone dead,
    I'd toddle safely home and die — in bed.

    Siegfried Sassoon

    Siegfried Sassoon was one of the great poets from World War One. The poetry from the likes of Sassoon and Wilfred Owen seemed to many to be an apt summary of the horrors that many had experienced during the war.

    Siegfried Sassoon was born on September 8th in Kent. Born into a reasonably well-off family, Sassoon was educated at Marlborough College and Clare College, Cambridge University where he studied Law and History. However, he left university before graduating but had discovered a love for the poetry of Tennyson and Yeats. Up until the outbreak of the war, Sassoon spent his time living a life of leisure – fox hunting, playing cricket and riding point-to-point. Encouraged by Edward Marsh to write poetry, Sassoon moved to London to immerse himself in literature. He rented out an apartment and in July met Rupert Brooke there. Though he was short of money and soon in debt, it was the type of experience that he was looking for.

    However, the war changed all this.

    Sassoon enlisted on August 2nd He joined the Sussex Yeomanry. However, while training he had an accident riding a horse that resulted in a badly broken right arm, which delayed his move to the
