SOKARI DOUGLAS CAMP CBE

Sokari Douglas Camp was born in Buguma, Nigeria, in and lives and works in London, UK, first exhibiting at the October Gallery in She has had more than forty solo shows worldwide and in Douglas Camp was awarded a CBE in recognition of her services to art.

Her work is in the permanent collections of the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC; Setagaya Art Museum, Tokyo; and the British Museum, London. Sokari Douglas CampCBE (born in Nigeria) is a London-based artist who has had exhibitions all over the world and was the recipient of a bursary from the Henry Moore Foundation. She was honoured as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Birthday Honours list.

Biography

Early years and education

Camp was born in Buguma, Nigeria, a Kalabari town in the Niger Delta. She was raised by her brother-in-law, the anthropologist Robin Horton. She studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California (–80), earned her BA degree at the Central School of

Sokari Douglas Camp, CBE, was born in Buguma, Rivers State, Nigeria. She studied fine art at Central School of Art and Design and received her MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art. Sokari has represented Britain and Nigeria in National exhibitions and has had more than 40 solo shows worldwide.

 

Since the early ʼs, she has exhibited widely in the UK, US, Japan and continental Europe at institutions such as The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, Museum of Mankind, London, The Smithsonian Institute, The National Museum of African Art, The Art Museum of Minneapolis, Setagaya Museum, Tokyo and the British Museum.  Her public artworks include Battle Bus: Living Memorial for Ken Saro‐Wiwa (), a full-scale replica of a Nigerian steel bus, which stands as a monument to the late Niger Delta activist and writer.

 

In Sokari was shortlisted for the Trafalgar Square Fourth Plinth. Her work is in permanent collections at The Smithsonian Museum, Washington, D.C., Setagaya Museum, Tokyo and the British Museum, London. In she was awarded a CBE in recognition of her services to art.
