Early Life
Yangdi was born Yang Ying in in Sui, China. His father Yang Jian was the Duke of Sui. Yang Jian changed his son’s name to Yang Guang after advice from the spiritual leader of the town. Yangdi studied the classical Confucian syllabus like all children of nobility in China. Yang Jian favored his second born Yangdi because of his physical and intellectual abilities.
In Emperor Xuan died. Yang Jian ruled as the regent on behalf of the young emperor’s son. In Yang forced the late emperor’s son to abdicate the throne, He declared himself the emperor and assumed the title Emperor Wen of the Sui dynasty. As a prince Yangdi served in the military as one of its top commanders. In Emperor Wen invaded the Chen dynasty. Yangdi and his elder brother Yang Jun led the military offensive into Chen territory.

The Sui dynasty emerged in after the fall of Han dynasty and three hundred years of civil war. It did not last very long, but it reunified China once again under the reign of the emperor.
The second emperor of the Sui Dynasty, Sui Yangdi finished the Grand Canal, which connected the two longest rivers in China: the Huang He (Yellow River) and Chang Jiang (Yangtze River). Although the canal made trade and transportation much easier, it was made with hundreds of deaths of forced labourers and high taxes.

Buddhism was brought to Sui Empire by Asian people through trades, migrations, and cultural assimilations. Buddhism was responsible for the rebirth of China, its reunification during the Sui Dynasty. It became important during the time of chaos and when the central political control was limited. Buddhism was utilised to uplift the cultural condition of the people as well.
