Most of the drummers that I knew, didn&#;t like the way Paul Motian played drums with the classic Bill Evans Trio during his association with the group from
The constant stop and starting in his playing drove them nuts: &#;Why doesn&#;t he just lay it down?&#; "What did he do, drop a stick?&#; &#;Did his drum kit run out of batteries?&#; &#;Why doesn&#;t he just swing?&#;
In retrospect, everyone has nothing but praise for the way Paul made the drums &#;fit in to what Evans and LaFaro were doing,&#; but, during its short-lived, year-and-a-half existence, such criticisms of Paul&#;s halting approach to drums in pianist Bill Evans&#; now-classic trio were more commonplace than most Jazz fans will admit.
Paul was aware of the criticisms of his work with Bill&#;s trio and remained very sensitive about the entire topic whenever he was asked about it.

One night in , drummer Art Taylor failed to show up for a Thelonious Monk gig, and a relative unknown sat in his place. Over the next six decades, the promising sideman would evolve into an extraordinary jazz bandleader and composer. Stephen Paul Motian () was born in Philadelphia and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of Armenian immigrants from Turkey. Paul grew up poor and became something of a “juvenile delinquent”— he was arrested 3 times before the age of thirteen.
At the age of twelve, he had his first drum lesson. Later in life, he would credit music with keeping him both alive and out of jail. While in high school, he began playing with local swing bands. He then joined the Navy and began performing in a Naval School of Music Unit Band. He was fortuitously stationed in Brooklyn prior to his discharge in , and called New York City home for the rest of his life. Immersed in the s New York jazz scene, he began jamming with musicians throughout the city while absorbing the performances of idols like Art Blakey, Max Roach, and Philly Joe Jones.

Stephen Paul Motian[1] (25 March &#; 22 November )[2][3] was an Americanjazz drummer, percussionist and composer of Armenian extraction.
He first came to prominence in the late s in the piano trio of Bill Evans, and later led several groups. Motian played an important role in freeing the drummer from strict time-keeping duties.
Biography
Motian was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. After playing guitar in his childhood, Motian began playing the drums at age 12, eventually touring New England in a swing band. During the Korean War he joined the Navy.
Motian became a professional musician in , and briefly played with pianist Thelonious Monk. He became well known as the drummer in pianist Bill Evans's trio (–64), initially alongside bassist Scott LaFaro and later Chuck Israels.[4][5]

With Bill Evans, he developed a way of playing that mirrored the pianist's phrasing and approach, often abandoning aspects of the drummer's traditional time-keeping role. He went on to prove that he is one of the finest trio drummers in jazz history, working with the free-jazz influenced group of Paul Bley and the more wide-ranging Keith Jarrett Trio. During the decade he played with Jarrett (), Motian developed a particular rapport with bassist Charlie Haden, in whose own groups he toured and recorded from time to time, from the s to the s.
