Kenneth Olden, a cell biologist, biochemist, and cancer researcher, is the founding dean at the School of Public Health of City University New York (CUNY). Born in in Parrottsville, Tennessee, Olden grew up in a rural community with his parents Matt and Augusta Olden and siblings. As a young child, he helped with daily tasks around the farm but also developed a love for reading books. Living in the Jim Crow South, Olden attended segregated schools and cleaned shoes for fifteen cents at a local barbershop in order to save money for college. After graduating from Tanner High School in Parrottsville in , he enrolled in Knoxville College with a scholarship.

While in college, Olden majored in biology and minored in chemistry. He graduated in with a BS degree in biology. Four years later, he studied Drosophila genetics and received a master’s degree in genetics from the University of Michigan. He then pursued a Ph.D. in biochemical research at Temple University and spent two years at the University of Rochester conducting research in bioenergetics and oxidative phosphorylation [a process in which the cell harnesses the energy through a series of chemical reaction

This is an interview with Dr. Kenneth Olden, Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.  The interview is being conducted by Dr. Victoria Harden and Dr. Sara Shostak of the Office of NIH History.

Victoria Harden:         Dr. Olden, thank you for speaking with us today.  Let us begin at the beginning. You were born in July in Parrottsville, Tennessee, and I’m looking for background information -- your family, your early education.  And, of course, at that time Tennessee was still segregated, and I would like for you to give us some information about growing up in the South as an African American and how you ended up in science.

Kenneth Olden:           Well, my mom and dad were moderately educated.  My mom finished third year of high school, and my dad finished the eighth grade, and that was that was pretty good for an African American in rural Tennessee in those days.  So, but my mother was very concerned.  There were five of us -- are still five of us -- and my mother was very concerned that we get a high school education.  I mean, they didn’t dream of college, but she was concerned that

The Biography Channel first began airing in in The network began due to the popularity of the original program of the same name that aired on the A&E network. The A&E network is a joint venture and collaboration between The Walt Disney Company, the Heart Corporation, and NBC. Before becoming the exclusive home for the series after which it was named, Biography, the network could most often be found airing fact based programming in addition to reruns of shows like Murder, She Wrote and Sherlock Holmes, that had previously aired on the original A&E network.

In , the network decided to shift the focus from the biography type series it had been airing into what they dubbed true stories about fascinating people. The network completely revamped the line-up of programming, and continued on under the shortened moniker, Bio.

In , the network was beginning to fail, so it rebranded once again. Reruns of house flipping and design shows were placed on the schedule, along with a list of 30 potential new series.
