Johan Thorn Prikker (6 June , The Hague - 5 March , Cologne) was a Dutch artist who worked in Germany after His activities were very eclectic, including architecture, lithography, furniture, stained-glass windows, mosaics, tapestries and book covers as well as painting. He also worked in a variety of styles; such as Symbolism, Impressionism and Art Nouveau.

Biography

He was the son of a house painter. From to , he was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Art, but left without completing his studies. In , his friend Jan Toorop introduced him to the work of the Belgian art group, Les XX, who he exhibited with. Two years later, Joséphin Péladan gave him a similar introduction to the Salon de la Rose + Croix. Much of his painting, in the Symbolist style, was done during this period, from to

(English translation:), Thorn Prikker's paintings are described as symbolist with a religious motif. In his work he did not show reality, but rather feelings, dreams and thoughts. In , Prikker opened the art dealership “Arts and Crafts” in The Hague, after he had decided to focus more on 'art in the service of the people'. However, his elegant designs of furniture and other utensils, in the style of Art Nouveau, did not fit in with the prevailing, austere style of the time. Due to financial worries and lack of recognition of his work in the Netherlands, he moved to Germany in There he started working as a teacher and became successful with monumental wall decorations, mosaics and stained glass windows for public buildings such as theaters and train stations. THORN PRIKKER, Johan (Den Haag, Keulen, ) Nederlands aquarellist, beeldhouwer, etser, lithograaf, meubelontwerper, glasschilder, glazenier, mozaïekkunstenaar, schilder, tekenaar, tapijtontwerper en boekbandontwerper. Hij werkte in een symbolistische, impressionistische en art-nouveaustijl. Opleiding aan de kunstacademie van Den Haag (), maar hij maakte deze opleiding uiteindelijk niet af. In werd hij door Jan Toorop in de Belgische kunstenaarsgroep Les XX geïntroduceerd en in door Joséphin Péladan in de Rozenkruizersgemeenschap. Zijn klein schilderkunstig oeuvre kwam grotendeels tussen en tot stand. Het zijn symbolistische werken met vaak een religieuze thematiek. Richtte samen met de architect en kunstenaar Chris Wegerif in de kunsthandel Arts & Crafts in Den Haag op. Hier waren niet alleen gebruiksvoorwerpen te koop, maar ook schilderijen en prenten, zodat de klant zijn woning geheel volgens de laatste mode (op de Belgische Art Nouveau geïnspireerd) kon inrichten.
