About our speakers:
Robin D.G. Kelley has spent decades as an activist and scholar exploring the history of social movements in the U.S. and internationally. Among his many published essays and books are Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination and Race Rebels: Culture, Politics, and the Black Working Class. Prof. Kelley is Distinguished Professor and Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History at UCLA.
Lara Kiswani is the executive director of the Arab Resource & Organizing Center and a faculty member in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University.
Emmaia Gelman is an American Studies scholar and NYU lecturer writing a political history of the ADL, and a queer antiracist in NYC.

As Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from to , Michael Chertoff led the country in blocking would-be terrorists from crossing our borders or implementing their plans if they were already in the country. He also transformed FEMA into an effective organization following Hurricane Katrina. His greatest successes have earned few headlines – because the important news is what didn’t happen.
Mr. Chertoff is the Co-founder and Executive Chairman at the Chertoff Group, where he provides high-level strategic counsel to corporate and government leaders on a broad range of security issues, from risk identification and prevention to preparedness, response and recovery. “Risk management has become the CEO’s concern,” he says. “We help our clients develop comprehensive strategies to manage risk without building barriers that get in the way of carrying on their business.”

Department of Homeland Security Reorganization: The 2SR Initiative
Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, on July 13, , announced a six-point agenda for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designed to ensure that its policies, operations, and structures are best aligned to address potential threats to the nation, both today and in the immediate future.1 This agenda resulted from what he called a Second Stage Review, or 2SR, which had been launched in early March, just after he assumed office, and had been conducted over the next three months. It involved, he said, "a systematic evaluation of the Department's operations, policies and structures." Indeed, as Secretary Chertoff explained, 2SR involved the evaluation of a variety of operational and policy issues, and among those was "the DHS organizational structure, to make sure that our organization is best aligned to support our mission." However, no report on the 2SR process and proposed reforms was issued. This report focuses primarily on the conclusions and proposals resulting from 2SR pertaining to organization and managerial lines of authority matters.
