When was the last time you were inspired?
Just recently I watched the “Bodies” exhibit in NY.

It was a showcase of actual dead people preserved for eternity with polymer or liquid silicone rubber.

It was amazing how even the entire network of veins and capillaries were mounted intact and that, you see not the macabre, but a better picture of yourself. I was inspired to donate my body for the exhibit but my daughter thought otherwise.

She exclaimed, “Mom, I don’t think I’d be happy to tell my friends - Hey! That’s my mom!”

And so, I sensed that she’d like me better in an urn.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
Deliberate if I want to get out of bed.

This children's book about the role of the mother in raising her children is written in verse rather than prose. It brings the attention of the reader to the amazing hands of mothers: hands that work untiringly in doing the household chores (or even at work since some mothers also go to offices or factories to help augment her family's income) and even to take care of her kids. Papel de liha or sandpaper is how her mother-in-law describes the hands of her daughter-in-law to her child because as the mom-in-law says, the mother works endlessly and "her hands are already callous like sandpaper" and that her son will no longer touch his wife's hands. This worries the child and one time she is sick and her face is touched by her mother's hands and she feels relieved to know that she is not touched by sandpaper but a very gentle loving mother's hand.

This is one of my all-time favorites when it comes to children&#;s books written by Filipino authors. I bought a copy years ago but in recent years, Adarna House has come out with a Silver Edition which is hard-bound and I could not resist buying another copy.
The Silver Edition copy has both the English and Filipino versions of the story. Papel de Liha (which translates to Sandpaper) is about the (or should it be or maybe even a million and one?) things that our mothers do for all of us. From the kitchen, to the living room, to the bedroom, and bathroom, mothers are always on the go and keeping themselves busy. I prefer the Filipino version of the story, largely because of the choice of words and the creative ways that the &#;sounds&#; of the words are put together.
