Sarabjit Singh का जन्म पंजाब के भिखिविंद गाँव में हुआ था, जो भारत-पाकिस्तान के बार्डर के बेहद नजदीक स्थित है। वे पेशे से एक किसान थे। इसके अलावा वे पहलवानी का भी शोक रखते थे।
उनके दोस्तों और करिबियों के अनुसार खुशमिजाज के सरबजीत 28 अगस्त की रात को शराब के नशे में बिना घेरा बंदी वाली अंतरराष्ट्रीय सीमा को अनजाने में पार कर गए और दूसरी तरफ पाकिस्तान के बोर्डर में गस्ती दे रहे पाकिस्तानी रैंजंर ने उन्हें गिरफ्तार कर लिया।

सरबजीत सिंह भारतीय मूल का ही व्यक्ति है जिसे पाकिस्तानी कोर्ट ने आतंकवादी हमलो में दोषी और जासूस करार दिया है. पाकिस्तानी कोर्ट के अनुसार में लाहौर और फैसलाबाद में हुए बम हमलो में वह भी सहभागी था और उसने 14 तमाशाईयो की हत्या भी की थी. लेकिन सरबजीत का कहना है की वह एक किसान है और बम हमले के तीन महीने बाद भटकते हुए अपने गाव की बॉर्डर से होकर पाकिस्तान आया था. अकथित भारतीय जानकारों और पाकिस्तानी अखबारों के अनुसार सिंह इंडियन रिसर्च एंड एनालिसिस विंग इंटेलिजेंस एजेंसी का गुप्तचर था और वह छुपकर पाकिस्तान में रहता था और जासूसी करता था.
पूरी जांच और पड़ताल के बाद लाहौर हाई कोर्ट के फैसले के अनुसार उसे दोषी ठहराया गया और मृत्यु की सजा सुनाई गयी. लेकिन यह सजा बाद में पकिस्तान सरकार द्वारा पोस्टपोंड (आगे बढ़ाई) कर दी गयी.
जबकि अप्रैल को जेल में उनपर कुछ कैदियों ने हमला किया और उसके 6 दिन बाद ही जिन्नाह हॉस्पिटल, लाहौर में उनकी मृत्यु हो गयी थी.
