Wicked: A Musical Biography

May 16,
I'm probably being too kind with my rating. It's MAYBE worth getting from a library (if you can find one that has it) and SKIMMING it if you REALLY REALLY love Wicked (which I do), this is the most horrible book I've read since middle school.

Avoid ALL books by Paul R. Laird, in my opinion. This book read like a really bad 7th grade book report. He started by summarizing, he quoted the GOOD books about Wicked (David Cote's Wicked: The Grimmerie, a Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Hit Broadway Musical & Carol de Giere's Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz from Godspell to Wicked, which devotes a large section to Wicked), which I already own and read.

He even started one chapter by saying "In the last chapter I" SERIOUSLY? I'd READ the last chapter, jerk. I was seriously offended by this book. No intelligent human being should consider it.

He would talk about some changes made in various versions of the songs, but NOT actually show the changes, just say that changes had been made. Really??? Enjoy the other Wicked books. Stay far away from this horribly written book.

Parts of it are worth skimming, since he does incl

Broadway Greats Who Played Elphaba and Glinda in ‘Wicked’ Through The Years

2

Original Glinda - Kristen Chenoweth

Chenoweth left a permanent mark on the role of Glinda the Good Witch. She was even involved very early in the show and character development by playing Glinda in several workshops before its official staging. Plenty of superfans will only be able to hear Chenoweth's rendition of Glinda as the definitive version, but many more great Glinda's followed her up.

Fun fact: Stephanie J. Block is technically the very first Elphaba because she was cast opposite Chenoweth in the workshops, but was replaced by Meznel after a few months. Block got her

IDEA

Stephen Schwartz: I got a call from my friend John Bucchino who was in Hawaii playing a concert for Holly Near. He called me and said, "I'm here in Hawaii and other than the concerts I don't have a whole lot to do. I have a room with an extra bed in it and I have a car, and the food is free. If you will cash in your Frequent Flyer miles - (and I was in L.A. at the time) - and come over for a weekend and keep me company, the rest of it is a free vacation in Hawaii" And of course I said, "I am so there."

At one point on the trip Holly, John and a friend of Holly's and I went snorkeling. We're on the boat coming back and Holly says "I reading this really interesting book called Wicked by Gregory Magurie and it's about the Wicked Witch of the West." It was one of those moments when as soon as I heard the idea I thought "Oh, this i
