I would have liked to have read this beautifully done children’s book before reáding the adult novèl Winter Counts by the same author. The baçkground àbout the author - that Heska Wanbli is his spirit name, for Instance, would have been useful to know. I leàrned so much in this book I didn’t know before about the Lakotàs and their ways, for instance, the Lakota Nation has probably over a billion dollars, accumulating even more as it sits in a bank account. The money has amassed from a suit they won when they sued the US Government over lands in the Black Hills they lost when the US didn’t honor a treaty agreement. This won lawsuit was in The Lakota wanted the land back - they look at wealth differently, i disvovered. Even so, I am a bit surprised the money hasn’t been used to help improve life for them and their children. They as a people, have many areas of need on the reservation, according to Mr. Weiden, the author. This money would possibly go a long way in eliminating some of the more urgent needs in the healthcare area, for example.

Brule Sioux Chief Spotted Tail

Among the Sioux chiefs of the &#;transition period,&#; only one was shrewd enough to read coming events in their true light. It is said of Spotted Tail that he was rather a slow-moving boy, preferring in their various games and mimic battles to play the role of councilor, to plan and assign to the others their parts in the fray. This he did so cleverly that he soon became a leader among his youthful contemporaries, and withal he was apt at mimicry and impersonation so that the other boys were accustomed to say of him, &#;He has his grandfather&#;s wit and the wisdom of his grandmother!&#;

Spotted Tail was an orphan, reared by his grandparents, and compelled to shift for himself at an early age. Thus, he was somewhat at a disadvantage among the other boys, yet even this fact may have helped develop his courage and ingenuity.

One minor incident of his young life, occurring at about his tenth year, is characteristic of the man. Amid a game, two boys became involved in a dispute which promised to be a serious one, as both drew knives. The young Spotted Tail instantly began to cry, &#;The Shoshone are upon us! To arms!

Spotted Tail (Sinte Galeska), a major Brule Sioux leader in the Plains Indian wars, was born to a man named Chunka (Tangled Hair) and a mother named Walks With Pipe, probably along the White River of South Dakota. Known as Jumping Buffalo in his youth, Spotted Tail got his adult name from a striped raccoon pelt that was given to him by a trapper.

In he was jailed at Fort Leavenworth in retaliation for the defeat of Lt. John Grattan's force the previous year by Brul&#;s, though Spotted Tail had not been involved in the incident. Upon his release in , he balanced Lakota nationalism with conciliation to the United States, as he was convinced of American military superiority.
