Harold Silverman Obituary
Harold Paul Silverman March 14, - October 29, Hal Silverman was born in Hartford, Conn. in as the first child of Leon and Lillian Silverman. His father, Leon, was born in Bucharest, Romania and migrated to the USA via Ellis Island at a young age. He met and married his wife Lillian who was from Pennsylvania. The family lived several years in Connecticut before moving to New York and then on to Los Angeles, Ca. when Hal was in grade school. Hal attended Fairfax High School and developed his interest in theater. During his high school years Hal sold newspapers after school to help his family during the depression and to save money. He made three dollars a day, gave one dollar to his mother and saved the rest. He bought his first car at 14 years of age, a Model T that cost $45, lied about his age and got his license. The money he saved from his newspaper job funded a trip to the British Isles in where he visited his mother's relatives and traveled around on a bike. While overseas, World War II broke out in Poland and Hal had to return to the USA. His father, Leon, while working for Universal Studios, was able to secure passage on a freighter for Hal&
Born into a military family in , Harold grew up in New Mexico and Germany. His parents were adventurous, and took the family on outings almost every weekend hiking in the desert, horseback riding and camping in the mountains, exploring castles and old gardens in Germany and camping in Italy. These outings, of course, left many lasting impressions.
After moving back with his family to the U.S., Harold began photographing. As a young teenager, he bought his first camera, a GAF Instamatic. He still has the camera today.
Harold is deeply influenced by the work of Wynn Bullock and W. Eugene Smith.
He earned a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), after which he produced fine art and taught photography at the college level for several years.
Since , Harold has been creating distinctive work in the studio, as well as in the night landscape. For over 30 years, Harold has specialized in Light Painting; an usual and difficult technique involving "painting" the light over a long time exposure.

Harold began practicing law in Syracuse in and his career spanned over 70 years, interrupted by two years in the United States Army during and after World War II. A highly regarded attorney, he served as president of the Board of Directors of Legal Services of Central New York in His volunteer work was recognized by the New York State Bar Association in , when he won the President's Pro Bono Service Award for small to mid-size law firms.
An avid sports enthusiast and accomplished tennis player, Harold won the Syracuse City Parks singles championship in , he was a member of the tennis team at Syracuse University, and he was president of the Syracuse Tennis Club in the mids. He also excelled at golf and bowling and he was an extremel
