Laure Prouvost

Language – in its broadest sense – permeates the video, sound, installation and performance work of Laure Prouvost. Known for her immersive and mixed-media installations that combine film and installation in humorous and idiosyncratic ways, Prouvost’s work addresses miscommunication and ideas becoming lost in translation. Playing with language as a tool for the imagination, Prouvost is interested in confounding linear narratives and expected associations among words, images and meaning. She combines existing and imagined personal memories with artistic and literary references to create complex film installations that muddy the distinction between fiction and reality. At once seductive and jarring, her approach to filmmaking employs layered storytelling, quick edits, montage and wordplay and is composed of a rich, tactile assortment of images, sounds, spoken and written phrases. The videos are often shown within immersive environments which comprise found objects, sculptures, painting and drawings, signs, furniture and architectural assemblages, that are rendered complicit within the overarching narrative of the installation.

LAURE PROUVOST IN CONVERSATION WITH NICOLAS VAMVOUKLIS

Laure, first of all, you should know that Antonis Pittas suggested reaching out to you in our previous FEATURES conversation&#; I thought we could play around with the Proust Questionnaire; it originates from a parlour game popularised by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist. To start, let me pick ten questions:

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Flying into the sky by grandma’s side.

What is your greatest fear?
To fall from the sky.

Which talent would you most like to have?
To sing like my aunty.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
To have opened the travel agency Deep Travel Ink and to have planted plants in Molenbeek through Oui Grow, a project grandma started for her neighbourhood. If you want to give her money for her project, here is the Oui Grow bank account: BE07

If you were to die and come back as an object, what would it be?
A glass potato.

Where would you most like to live?
Molenbeek-sur-mère.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?
My granddad and his octopus.

Who are your heroes in real

Laure Prouvost’s installations draw you in through their inventive approaches to storytelling. They unfold across numerous media and senses, and are teeming with poetic connections, fantastical elements, wit, and wordplay. She describes her process as an act of translation — a sensory elaboration of feelings, intuitions, and moments in time. Imaginative new logics and relationships emerge around these perspectives, inviting you to float along alternative currents of time and space, to unlearn everyday codes and structures, and to open yourself to new ways of engaging with topics as complex as kinship, migration, and climate change.

Over the past two years, I’ve had the great pleasure of working closely with Prouvost and a team of collaborators to develop an installation imagining a ‘quantum perspective,’ and the shifts in thinking it would call for. She named this WE FELT A STAR DYING, and it is presented by LAS Art Foundation at Kraftwerk Berlin until May 4, travelling to OGR Torino in the autumn.

Why quantum? Quantum physics emerged a century ago, challenging deterministic views of reality with the suggestion that the behaviour of particles can never fully be predicted
