Howard. . , Mound Bayou businessman and physician Theodore Roosevelt Mason Howard () founded and led Mississippi's pre-eminent civil rights organization in the s, the Regional Council of Negro Leadership. A charismatic speaker and mentor to Medgar Evers, he led rallies and successful boycotts. He attempted reconciliation with the white community, but a bloody campaign against black civil rights activists, he left the state in , T. R. M. Howard, M.D., a Kentucky Native, founded the Regional Council of Negro Leadership (RCNL) in in Cleveland as a parallel organization to the white Delta Council, which gave economic interests a voice regarding public policy in the state. The RCNL was made up of black leaders from many walks of life: ministers, business people, and members of other activist organizations. - Born in in Murray, Kentucky Theodore Roosevelt Mason Howard attended Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama and Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska before going on to medical school at College of Medical Evangelists in Loma Linda, California. After marrying Helen Nela Boyd in , Howard completed his residency in St. Louis, Missouri. In , Howard and his family moved to the all-black town of Mound Bayou, Mississippi where he worked as a surgeon and became an outspoken activist and leader in the civil rights movement. Howard founded the Regional Council of Negro Leadership in and rose to prominence as a national civil rights figure during the investigation into the murder of Emmett Till and its subsequent trial. Following persistent death threats, Howard moved his family to Chicago, Illinois. While in Chicago, Howard became president of the National Medical Association and founded the Howard Medical Center.

Born March 4, , Theodore Roosevelt Mason Howard was a wealthy doctor, successful entrepreneur, and civil rights activist. Born and raised in Murray, Kentucky, Howard seemed destined to follow in his father’s footsteps as a tobacco twister until a white doctor at Murray’s local hospital recognized his ambitions of higher education. Dr. William Herbert Mason delivered Howard and had employed his mother as a cook for several years. Howard impressed Dr. Mason with his quick ability to learn, sharp intellect, and dreams of a college education. Dr. Mason gave Howard a chance when he was 15 years old by employing him in the local hospital where he thrived under a variety of jobs. It was there that he decided the medical field would be his future.
After having proven his work ethic and interest in medicine at the hospital, Howard entered historically black Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama in with the financial support and formal recommendation of Dr. Mason.
