Biographical history
Lucilla Andrews ( – ) was a romance writer who published thirty-five novels throughout her lifetime and is known as having set the standard for romance novels within the genre’s writing community. She was born November 20 in Suez, Egypt, attended boarding school in England, and worked as a military nurse from During the Second World, she continued working for the British Red Cross, and eventually drew on this wartime experience as inspiration for her writing career. Her first short story was published in , and her first novel was published in , the same year her husband died. After, she continued writing in order to support her daughter. She moved to Edinburgh in where she continued to live for the rest of her life. She was a founding member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, for which she was honoured with a lifetime achievement award shortly before her death on October 3rd

Lucilla Matthew Andrews was born on 20 November in Suez, Egypt, the third of four children of William Henry Andrews and Lucilla Quero-Bejar. They met in Gibraltar, and married in Her mother was daughter of a Spanish doctor and descended from the Spanish nobility. Her British father workerd by the Eastern Telegraph Company (later Cable and Wireless) on African and Mediterranean stations until At the age of three, she was sent to join her older sister at boarding school in Sussex.
She joined the British Red Cross in and later trained as a nurse at St Thomas' Hospital, London, during World War II. In , she retired and married Dr James Crichton, and she discovered, that he was addicted to drugs. In , soon after their daugther Veronica was born, he was committed to hospital and she returned to nursing and writing. In , she sold her firt romance novel, published in , the same year that her husband died. She specialised in Doctor-Nurse romances, using her personal experience as inspiration. Lucilla Andrews wrote 33 novels, an autobiography, and many short stories. Her books were published in 11 languages and sold almost 3 million copies during her lifetime. The Nursing Times said that Lucilla was “arguably the best of all writers of hospital fiction”, and The Guardian called her the “brand leader in hospital fiction”. Lucilla was born in Egypt, but went to boarding school in England. She trained as a Nightingale nurse at St Thomas’s hospital in London. Her first published work was a short story in Good Housekeeping magazine, which she wrote while working as a nurse and bringing up her young daughter. Lucilla was a founder member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the RNA shortly before her death. Despite their huge popularity, Lucilla’s novels were out of print for some time, and have never before been published as ebooks. Happily, Wyndham Books are now reissuing her entire backlist of novels in ebook editions.
